Oh hi. How’re you holding up? These are strange times, aren’t they?
The sun is shining today, but somehow, it’s still felt like a heavy, gloomy day. Bay Area schools officially announced today that they’re closed for the rest of the year. We all knew this was coming, it’s not like the announcement was a surprise, but still. It’s real now. The tiny flame of hope, the pipedream that our return to normalcy might come soon, has been officially extinguished.
Anyway, here are a few little updates from my corner of the world.
Reading: Anything and everything that feels comforting. This topic might deserve its own separate post; I always have a lot to say about books.
Baking: Alison Roman’s tiny, salty, chocolate-y cookies. 10/10, would recommend. Bonus: No flour needed, if you are also having a hard time tracking that down.
Searching: For flour, so that I can bake other desserts too.
Scheming: A socially distant hand-off of my friend’s sourdough starter. Sean is technically gluten-free, but should I start making bread anyway? This seems like the time to do it.
Listening: To this lovely audiobook. A quirky heroine, a British narrator, and a plot that I can already tell is going to be frivolous but wonderful? Exactly what I need in my ears right now.
Drinking : Aperol Spritzes have been our house special this week.
Considering: Writing for 100 days straight as my own twist on this challenge. Can I do it?! Stay tuned.
Enjoying: All the flowers blooming, like the funky ones pictured above, in our neighborhood right now! It’s as if they missed the memo about these gloomy days. I appreciate that they’re carrying on as scheduled.
Admiring: All of the essential workers keeping us safe! Endlessly grateful, endlessly worried, valiantly hoping that after this our society puts real policies in place to make sure you and your efforts are better rewarded and protected.
Limiting: The news. Only once a day, before I go for a run. Okay, maybe twice, but that’s it… I swear.
Smelling: Clorox Wipes and Mrs. Meyer’s Geranium cleaning spray.
Wearing: Sweatpants, constantly.
Ordering: Pepperoni pizza, for dinner tonight.
Feeling: Tired. Optimistic. Worried. Grateful. Heavy. Light. All of the things, all at once.
